LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J., Dec. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Digital 5(TM), the industry leader in home content distribution software, today announced its collaboration with Atheros Communications, Inc. , a leading developer of advanced wireless LAN (WLAN) chipsets, to create a reference design for low-cost, wireless-enabled digital media adapter and DVD player applications.
The reference design is an advanced audio/video solution that is capable of wirelessly delivering a wide variety of content such as music, photos and movies from a Windows PC, media gateway, or Internet connection to a TV or audio system anywhere in the home. The design combines an Atheros 802.11a/b/g chipset with Super AG(TM) technology, an advanced digital media processor from ALi Corporation, and multimedia software from Digital 5 into a low-cost reference design that will enable Original Design Manufacturers (ODMs) and Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) to quickly bring to market a new class of low-cost digital media adapters and DVD players.
"This A/V reference design will enable manufacturers to develop high performance, sub-$100 digital media adapters for the market," said Colin Macnab, vice president of marketing and business development for Atheros Communications. "Consumers want low-cost, reliable wireless products for the home. We are very pleased to be working with Digital 5 to integrate our WLAN technology into new digital media adapters and DVD players that meet consumers' needs."
Digital 5 content distribution software incorporates advanced Quality of Service (QoS), DRM and security features and enables interoperability across multiple devices to allow the communication and sharing of information and media content across multiple wired or wireless home networks. Digital 5 software makes it easy for consumers to enjoy their stored or Internet content anytime, anywhere throughout the home. It is currently featured in DVD players by Gateway and GoVideo, and the NETGEAR Wireless Digital Music Player (MP101).
The reference design with Atheros' WLAN solution supports Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) and the latest WLAN security standards in hardware, without performance reduction. These hardware-supported standards include Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) and the newly ratified IEEE 802.11i Enhanced Security using Advanced Encryption Standard (AES). Atheros' wireless chipset also supports the wireless multimedia Quality of Service capabilities defined in the draft 802.11e specification. For even greater performance, the Atheros 802.11a/b/g chipset features Super AG technology, which employs adaptive bandwidth technology to enable more than 60 Mbps of end-user throughput based on channel availability.
