Digital Universe Adds Leading Internet Expert Lawrence Lessig to Board of Advisors.

Prof. Lawrence Lessig Appointment Underscores Digital Universe Commitment to Bring Together Renowned Experts Across Disciplines

SCOTTS VALLEY, Calif., March 14 /PRNewswire/ -- The Digital Universe Foundation today announced that Stanford University Professor Lawrence Lessig, founder and chairman of the Creative Commons and a board member of the Electronic Frontier Foundation, has joined its Board of Advisors.

The Digital Universe Board of Advisors consists of scholars, experts and leaders in Internet technology. Its function is to advise the Board of Directors of the Digital Universe Foundation.

"Prof. Lessig is a key addition to the Digital Universe Advisory Board," said Dr. Bernard Haisch, president of the Digital Universe Foundation. "His expertise in the areas of Internet copyright and creative commons will be a powerful asset in fulfilling our goal of creating the world's most authentic, accurate and freely available source of information on the Internet."

Lessig is currently Professor of Law at Stanford Law School and founder of the university's Center for Internet and Society. Prior to joining the Stanford faculty, he was the Berkman Professor of Law at Harvard Law School and a Professor at the University of Chicago. He clerked for Judge Richard Posner on the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals and Justice Antonin Scalia on the United States Supreme Court.

During Lessig's distinguished career, he has received numerous awards, including the Free Software Foundation's Freedom Award, and was named one of Scientific American's Top 50 Visionaries for arguing "against interpretations of copyright that could stifle innovation and discourse online." He is also the author of Free Culture (2004), The Future of Ideas (2001) and Code and Other Laws of Cyberspace (1999). He chairs the Creative Commons project and serves on the board of the Free Software Foundation, the Electronic Frontier Foundation and the Public Library of Science and Public Knowledge.
